TrueBike Secret #1: No Flywheel
We have all experienced how indoor cycling is different than cycling outdoors. We want your indoor experience to feel the same as outdoors. That’s why we created the TrueBike: The first robotized indoor bike. We skipped the flywheel, and replaced it with a powerful electric motor.
The weight of typical flywheel mechanisms, even though it can be as high as 25 kilos, combines with their rotation speeds to only result in an effective cycling weight of about 8 kilos. This severely limits their ability to store energy and therefore also their ability to create resistance.
As a result, the flywheel stops spinning too quickly when you stop pedaling, and speeds up much too easily. While increasing the flywheel weight is simple, the problem is that the weight needed to replicate both external and internal resistance amounts to 450 kilos. Pretty heavy, right? So that’s where the motor came in. Read more about this innovation.
